Tucked in off US-131 between Walloon Lake and Petoskey sits Boyne Valley Vineyards – easily recognizable by the pale yellow 1952 Chevy 3100 truck parked on a roadside bluff (unless it is winter, when you might spot a vintage snowcat.)

Dow the dirt drive, a monitor barn style tasting room features plenty of windows and natural light, with a modern yet rustic décor.

This is a popular place for guests to order a glass (or bottle) of wine and a charcuterie platter, hummus or dessert plate, before settling in near the fireplace, outside on the patio, or on the elevated Tree House deck.

Sampling new varieties of wine is a refreshing way to enjoy a delightful Up North afternoon, especially when you’re surrounded by acres of vineyards and the backdrop of a scenic 113-acre nature preserve.

Boyne Valley Vineyards, a small boutique tasting room nestled along U.S. 131 between Walloon Lake and Petoskey, offers a friendly new space to do just that.

Ownership is a family affair, with Tom and Christi Mahaney, and Mary Ann and Marc Lippe (Tom’s twin sister and brother-in-law) sharing responsibilities at the vineyard, which launched in 2016 and produced 1,000 cases in its first year.

At Boyne Valley Vineyards, you can enjoy a glass of wine and then snowshoe through the winery’s property to the trails at the Postle Nature Preserve — or snowshoe first and then enjoy your wine. Heck, maybe wine both before and after. However you choose to do it, co-owner Mary Ann Lippe said if a snowshoe through the vineyard and adjacent preserve aren’t enough to warm you on a cold winter’s day, the vineyard’s igloos and firepits are sure to keep you toasty for your toasting.

Boyne Valley Vineyards Featured on Michigan’s Wine Country

When Boyne Valley Vineyards was looking for new ways to elevate the wine-tasting experience for its customers, a treehouse tasting room seemed to be the answer.

Tasting room and events manager Mary Ann Lippe explains that the barn’s location was first chosen because of the three maple trees behind it. Once in the tasting room, visitors can walk upstairs to a balcony where there’s a door that currently leads to nowhere — for now. Eventually, it will lead to the new treehouse tasting room.
